Reyes MagosThe Reverend Jayne Ruiz, Coordinator for Hispanic Ministry for the Miami Presbytery, provided the following summary of the Reyes Magos celebration held at Honey Creek Presbyterian Church. Honey Creek was pround to provide the facilities and help with the service. We look forward to many more celebrations like this in the future.
Many needy children and families from at least five Miami Valley counties were very blessed this past holiday season through numerous gifts and donations from churches and individuals to Hispanic Ministries. Every child was able to receive a gift, along with new scarves and gloves, while the adults received new blankets. In addition we were involved in a number of holiday events to reach out to the community.
A bi-lingual Three Kings Celebration (Epiphany) was held at Honey Creek Presbyterian Church, Sunday, January 6. This day has traditionally been more revered in Hispanic countries than even Christmas Day, for this is the time when the Magi visited the baby Jesus bringing gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh. It is, therefore, the three kings who bring the gifts to the children; not Santa Claus. There was a spirit of great anticipation and excitement in the air at the celebration. The Children from local Hispanic communities were the stars of our play - from baby Jesus, who was a three-month old infant, along with the shepards and the three kings. The parents and the children were excited about their participation in the play because they considered it an honor. Maria
Rodriquez, who attends Xenia Memorial, spoke about the meaning of Reyes Magos (Epiphany). Children performed songs; Uriel, a man from the local community came forward to lead with guitar; and local women led the singing. After the service, we had a potluck dinner, the gifts, and two pinatas (one for the younger and the other for the older children).
We thank all of you for this holiday season. We wish to thank Honey Creek Presbyterian Church, along with Rev. Denise Ingram, for their tireless support and assistance in making the Epiphany Celebration possible.
