Robotic automation has become ubiquitous in the modern manufacturing landscape, spanning an overwhelming range of processes and applications-- from small scale force-controlled grinding operations for orthopedic joints to large scale composite manufacturing of aircraft fuselages. Smart factories, seamlessly linked via industrial networks and sensing, have revolutionized mass production, allowing for intelligent, adaptive manufacturing processes across a broad spectrum of industries. Against this background, an emerging group of researchers, designers, and fabricators have begun to apply robotic technology in the pursuit of architecture, art, and design, implementing them in a range of processes and scales.

Coupled with computational design tools the technology is no longer relegated to the repetitive production of the assembly line, and is instead being employed for the mass-customization of non-standard components. The emerging discourse surrounding robotic fabrication seeks to question the existing norms of manufacturing and has far reaching implications for the future of how architects, artists, and designers engage with materialization processes.

The adoption of digital fabrication in the creative industries continues to accelerate as the potential for innovation and creative expression using robotics is being harnessed. ROB ARCH will provide hands-on experience with the most recent robotic technologies as well as a platform for dissemination and an opportunity for researchers and industry to exchange expertise, explore methods, compare techniques and forge new connections. The organisers of ROB ARCH invite authors to submit papers with original research relating to the use of robots in architecture, art, and design. Paper Abstract submission: May 15, Paper submission: June 15, The ROB ARCH conference series aims to allow practitioners to share expertise, to bring together teams of international researchers, to foster networks, to increase knowledge, and to stimulate innovation.

On imprecisionand infidelity. The project employs fabrication tools which are typically used in highly precise and predetermined applications, but uniquely thematizes the unpredictable aspects of these processes as applied to architectural component design. By integrating responsive sensing systems, this paper demonstrates real-time feedback loops which consider the spontaneous agency and intuition of the architect or craftsperson rather than the execution of static or predetermined designs. This paper includes new developments in robotics software for architectural design applications, ceramic-deposition 3D printing, sensing systems, materially-driven pattern design, and techniques with roots in the arts and crafts.

This paper presents a novel constructive system made solely of wood, enabled by a cooperative robotic fabrication process. The constructive system builds on recent developments in dowel-laminated timber DLT as well as advances made in the field of digital fabrication. The paper demonstrates through three experiments how the design space of the dowel-laminated timber constructive system can be expanded, through the implementation of cooperative robotic arms, from purely planar geometries to more complex and curved ones.

In the last two decades, the exploration of digital design and fabrication technologies has stimulated the development of a variety of interests and strategies to materialize increasingly complex and customized solutions in architecture, with traditional building materials. Reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in the building industry today and throughout its history has been the subject of vast research into its performance as a construction material and its tectonic potential in architecture. As such, the introduction of digital fabrication processes in concrete construction represents the biggest prospect for renovation of our built environment and at the same time, presents particular difficulties and opportunities, which are now being addressed. In an effort to investigate the alternative design and material possibilities in concrete emerging from the use of digital fabrication technologies in architecture, this paper proposes a focused view of digital fabrication applied to concrete construction with two areas of research.
