DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POSITIVE AND NON-POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMP

My Enquiry List: 0 items View list. Enquiry List. There are two main families of pumps; positive displacement and centrifugal rotodynamic , both of which have their uses and best areas of application. It is important however to be able to identify when each pump type should be selected, which ultimately comes down to their working principle and the application at hand. Positive displacement pumps are characterised by an operation that moves fluid by trapping a fixed volume, usually in a cavity, and then forces that trapped fluid into the discharge pipe. For visual reference of the performance comparisons between the two working principles see below performance curves that show how both centrifugal and positive displacement pumps' duty are affected by different factors.

What is the difference between the positive and non-positive displacement pump?

A Positive Displacement Pump has an expanding cavity on the suction side and a decreasing cavity on the discharge side. Liquid flows into the pumps as the cavity on the suction side expands and the liquid flows out of the discharge as the cavity collapses. The volume is a constant given each cycle of operation. A Positive Displacement Pump must never operate against closed valves on the discharge side of the pump - it has no shut-off head like Centrifugal Pumps. A Positive Displacement Pump operating against closed discharge valves continues to produce flow until the pressure in the discharge line is increased until the line bursts or the pump is severely damaged - or both. A relief or safety valve on the discharge side of the Positive Displacement Pump is absolute necessary.

Positive displacement pumps, which lift a given volume for each cycle of operation, can be divided into two main classes, reciprocating and rotary. Reciprocating pumps include piston, plunger, and diaphragm types; rotary pumps include gear, lobe, screw, vane, and cam pumps. The plunger pump is the oldest type in common use. Piston and plunger pumps consist of a cylinder in which a piston or plunger moves back and forth. In plunger pumps the plunger moves through a stationary packed seal and is pushed into the fluid, while in piston pumps the packed seal is carried on the piston that pushes the fluid out of the cylinder. As the piston moves outward, the volume available in the cylinder increases, and fluid enters through the one-way inlet valve. As the piston moves inward, the volume available in the cylinder decreases, the pressure of the fluid increases, and the fluid is forced out through the outlet valve.

A rotodynamic pump is a kinetic machine in which energy is continuously imparted to the pumped fluid by means of a rotating impeller , propeller , or rotor , in contrast to a positive displacement pump in which a fluid is moved by trapping a fixed amount of fluid and forcing the trapped volume into the pump's discharge. A pump is a mechanical device generally used for raising liquid from a lower level to higher one. This is achieved by creating a low pressure at the inlet and high pressure at the outlet of the pump. Due to low inlet pressure, the liquid rises from where it is to be stored or supplied. However, work has to be done by a prime mover to enable it to impart mechanical energy to the liquid which ultimately converts into pressure energy. Pumps are classified as follows: [5]. A positive displacement pump can operate by forcing a fixed volume of fluid from inlet pressure section of the pump into the discharge zone of the pump.

Pressure - Positive displacement pumps work for high pressure applications, pressure might be upto bar. Non-positive displacement pumps are basically used for low pressure applications and are designed to work for a maximum pressure of 18 to 20 bar. At higher or lower pressures, efficiency decreases.

The Differences Between Centrifugal Pumps Vs. Positive Displacement Pumps

Both types of pump offer a number of benefits and areas of application. However, choosing the wrong pump could result in process failure and a poor return on investment. For this reason, it is essential to understand the differences between centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, and which one will be suitable for the application at hand.

Rotodynamic pump

Learn the difference between a positive and non-positive displacement pump thanks to our team of experts at Global Pumps. A positive displacement pump provides a constant flow at fixed speed, regardless of changes in pressure. The pump makes the fluid move by trapping a fixed amount and forcing the volume into the discharge pipe. The liquid flows into the pump as the cavity on the suction side opens or expands, whilst the liquid flows into the discharge as the cavity closes or decreases. Through every cycle of operation, the volume is the same.

Across the industry, professionals are constantly working to develop and implement the latest in pump and valve technology. Recently, EmpoweringPumps. But for those who need a brush up on pump basics, we thought it would be a good time to discuss the differences between centrifugal and positive displacement pumps. Nearly all pumps fall within these two categories, with centrifugal being the most common. However, positive displacement pumps come in a wider variety such as gear, lobe, peristaltic, screw, and many other types of pumps.

A non-positive-displacement pump produces a continuous flow. However, because it does not provide a positive internal seal against slippage, its output varies.

Positive Displacement Pump versus Centrifugal Pump.

A positive displacement pump makes a fluid move by trapping a fixed amount and forcing displacing that trapped volume into the discharge pipe. Some positive displacement pumps use an expanding cavity on the suction side and a decreasing cavity on the discharge side. Liquid flows into the pump as the cavity on the suction side expands and the liquid flows out of the discharge as the cavity collapses. The volume is constant through each cycle of operation. Rotodynamic pumps or dynamic pumps are a type of velocity pump in which kinetic energy is added to the fluid by increasing the flow velocity.

When pumping fluids from one casing to another, there are several variables to be taken into account when choosing what pump should be used. Sometimes it is better to use a centrifugal pump and at other times a positive displacement pump is preferred. In this blog, we take a short look at the way the pumps operate. Then we go further into the differences between the two pumps and give advice on when to use which pump.

A non-positive displacement pump's output flow rate can change in response to the pressure on the outlet. They use Newton's first law of motion to move fluid.
