Natural Products pp Cite as. Phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables or their individual components nutraceuticals positively contribute to human health. Mostly, these nutrients have antioxidative property that impacts redox imbalance and can lead to prevention of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, and age-related disorders such as dementia.
Over 7, flavonoids and phenolic compounds and naturally occurring carotenoids seemingly with health benefits have been documented in plants.
Fruits and vegetables are dietary sources of pro-health nutrients nutraceuticals ; however, the level of an individual antioxidant is low in the currently used germplasm, thus limiting them in meeting the recommended daily allowance RDA. Nonetheless, the awareness about their health benefits has increased the global demand for and consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Advanced molecular breeding and genetic engineering approaches are providing novel tools to greatly increase the levels of many desirable nutraceuticals, which is being made easier because their metabolic pathways are now known. The biotechnological interventions have already allowed severalfold increases in the content of flavonoids and carotenoids in fruit crops and essential fatty acids in oil crops.

Nutrition is an interdisciplinary science that studies the interactions of nutrients with the body in relation to maintenance of health and well-being. Nutrition is highly complex due to the underlying various internal and external factors that could model it. Thus, hacking this complexity requires more holistic and network-based strategies that could unveil these dynamic system interactions at both time and space scales. The ongoing omics era with its high-throughput molecular data generation is paving the way to embrace this complexity and is deeply reshaping the whole field of nutrition. Understanding the future paths of nutrition science is of importance from both translational and clinical perspectives.

Transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are three major platforms of comprehensive omics analysis in the science of food and complementary medicine. Other omics disciplines, including those of epigenetics and microRNA, are matters of increasing concern. The increased use of the omics approach in food science owes much to the recent advancement of technology and bioinformatic methodologies.
The emergence of food metabolomics, otherwise known as foodomics, has opened new frontiers and possibilities for scientists to characterize and simultaneously determine and obtain the comprehensive profile of the food metabolome.
Description Food Bioscience is a peer-reviewed academic journal publishing original research articles, reviews, and commentaries concerning the latest development in multidisciplinary areas in food science, with an emphasis on the mechanistic studies of food quality and stability at the molecular and cellular levels. In addition, we also address up-to-date research highlights, news and views, and commentaries covering research policies and funding trends. All research and review articles are subject to strict peer review organized by the journal, and final acceptance or rejection decision resides with the Editor-in-Chief of Food Bioscience.
