This paper describes the clinical and research evidence for the importance of the relational context of posttraumatic stress disorder in young children. We review 17 studies that simultaneously assessed parental and child functioning following trauma. Also, a Compound Model is proposed, with three distinctive patterns of the parent—child relationship that impact on posttraumatic symptomatology in young children.

Opening Scenarios: A Relational Perspective on How to Deal with Multiple Therapeutic Views

The aim of this work is to provide therapists with a conceptual outline to help them utilize theoretical and methodological perspectives from different psychotherapy models. More specifically, we will start with three basic assumptions from the social constructionist paradigm, particularly effective in bringing together different perspectives in therapy and providing therapists with useful criteria for selecting among them. The assumptions are as follows: 1 the psychological world of the individual is constructed within relational processes, mainly through dialogue; 2 in general, discourse can be classified as either generative or degenerative; and 3 individuals construct their life narratives based also on a common-sense that can derive from psychological theories developed within specific cultural traditions.

Clinical Practice Guidelines for Assessment of Children and Adolescents

Child and Family Practice: A Relational Perspective , Second Edition presents important guidelines and principles for working with children, their families, and their service-providing organizations. It is grounded in the traditional social work theories of relationship with emphasis on three core concepts: relational connection, evidence-guided knowledge, and reflexivity. With this text students can connect theory to evidence-based practice and use realistic case studies for classroom role-play and engaging discussion. Cohen Konrad's goal is to help students connect science, theory, and the human qualities necessary to effect positive change and inspire hope in the lives of children and families. Assessing children and adolescents is challenging. The consultation may or may not even be sought for the most impairing problem at hand. While children may be able to report the nature of symptoms, they may not be very good at reporting the timing and duration of their problems. They may not report problems if they are embarrassing or show them in a bad light. Clinical assessments with children and adolescents are, therefore, elaborate and require the clinician to be astute and conscientious in obtaining information from multiple sources and settings, i. There are bound to be discrepancies in the report; nevertheless, multi-source information is a requirement during diagnosis and management.
