DOI: In Knowledge Management KM discipline, the nature of KM itself has long been discussed and sometimes even its existence and meaning have been questioned. Therefore we tried through empirical investigation of differences between KM and IM to distinguish the KM from IM and to try to draw a distinct line between both approaches.
Information can be thought of as the resolution of uncertainty ; it is that which answers the question of "What an entity is" and thus defines both its essence and the nature of its characteristics. The concept of information has different meanings in different contexts. Information is associated with data. The difference is that information resolves uncertainty. Information is a set of data that is processed in a meaningful way according to the given requirement. It is processed, structured, or presented in a given context to make it meaningful and useful. Information assigns meaning and improves the reliability of the data. It helps to ensure undesirability and reduces uncertainty. Therefore, when the data is transformed into information, it never has any useless details.
To put it into context, think of data as any series of random numbers and words that hold no meaning whatsoever. For example:. CriteriaDataInformationMeaningRaw facts, that are the building blocks for information. Combined data filled with relevance and significance.
It is easy to get confused about information and knowledge. People often use the terms interchangeably, without knowing the fact that there are slight and subtle differences between information and knowledge. These two are important concepts of knowledge management system, wherein the former means processed data about someone or something, while the latter refers to useful information gained through learning and experience.
Knowledge vs Information. Many a time people perceive things based on either what they have seen, experienced, heard, read, learned or inferred after some experimentation. These perceptions are then categorized in the mind as data, information, knowledge, understanding or wisdom. Unlike wisdom , information and knowledge perceptions are as a result of what the brain has recorded in the past. That said, we need to know how knowledge differs from information if it does and if one can exist without the other. Information refers to data that has been given some meaning by way of relational connection.
