Although in widespread use, the term skull base surgery is somewhat of a misnomer. Only a minority of these procedures are undertaken to expose lesions actually located primarily within the skull base. A substantial portion of the procedures are conducted to expose deep-seated intracranial lesions situated either adjacent to the brainstem eg, midbrain, pons, or medulla or beneath the cerebral cortex. We prefer to use the term transbasal surgery for intracranial tumors.

An invaluable resource for gaining a visual orientation to skull base surgery. Praise for this book: " [Four stars] Populated with superb pictures of anatomical dissections A richly illustrated, step-by-step guide to the full range of approaches in skull base surgery, this book is designed to enable the surgeon to gain not only the technical expertise for common procedures, but to be able to confidently modify standard approaches when necessary. Full-color images of cadavers orient the surgeon to the clinical setting by presenting in precise detail the perspective encountered in the operating room. The images demonstrate surgical anatomy and the relevant structures adjacent to the exposures. Special emphasis on the relationship between the operative corridor and the surrounding anatomy helps the surgeon develop a clear understanding of whether tissues adjacent to the dissection can be exposed without complications.

A 3D stereotactic atlas of the adult human skull base

The skull base region is anatomically complex and poses surgical challenges. Although many textbooks describe this region illustrated well with drawings, scans and photographs, a complete, 3D, electronic, interactive, realistic, fully segmented and labeled, and stereotactic atlas of the skull base has not yet been built. Our goal is to create a 3D electronic atlas of the adult human skull base along with interactive tools for structure manipulation, exploration, and quantification. From the scans, by employing dedicated tools and modeling techniques, 3D digital virtual models of the skull, brain, cranial nerves, intra- and extracranial vasculature have earlier been constructed. Integrating these models and developing a browser with dedicated interaction, the skull base atlas has been built.

The cholesteatoma, strictly speaking a cyst and not a cancer, nevertheless shows expansive and destructive growth patterns that may give rise to serious symptoms and consequences, including fatality, not unlike those seen for malignant neoplasms.
