In literary theory, a Marxist interpretation reads the text as an expression of contemporary class struggle. Literature is not simply a matter of personal expression or taste. It somehow relates to the social and political conditions of the time.
An excellent summary of a very complex material and a really elaborate and understandable writing while maintaining a good advanced level of complexity still Thank you Mr. Hero for this effort. Literature , meanwhile, for related reasons, has become problematic in quite new ways. Its details belong to the argument as a whole, but I must say, at this point, that it is, in my view, a Marxist theory, and indeed that in its specific fields it is, in spite of and even because of the relative unfamiliarity of some of its elements, part of what I at least see as the central thinking of Marxism.

For example, in Marxism and Literature , Williams specifies several elements that comprise the social experience he called a structure of feeling: spatial, temporal, and affective characteristics as well as a particular relationship to power.
By considering all of these elements but allowing for a wider range of variation in each than Williams did, we can conduct more detailed analyses of socially shared affective phenomena. Such an approach also helps differentiate among multiple structures of feeling that exist simultaneously within a society and can lead to a better understanding of how their coexistence creates social change that may otherwise be difficult to explain.
He suggests for example that, in England during the Restoration, two distinct structures of feeling arose among the defeated Puritans and in the restored Court.

This article aims to present methodological underpinnings of Socio-poetics research connected to education; more specifically, to rethink inter and transculturality envisioning knowledge decolonization, as well as, to describe the five Socio-poetics research methods basic orientation. When we come across the word Science, it can be quite agreeable that it automatically refers us to experiments, proofs, domain, and truth. Far from being a new connection, we believe this is due to the fact that Western scientific tradition is rooted in Eurocentric culture 18 Nevertheless, in the preface to The Theater and Its Double, Antonin Artaud reflects upon the concern that a culture that is made to govern life, moves forward, however, straying from it. But where do we see that life, our lives, have been affected by these systems? Artaud, , p.
Raymond Williams, who died on this day in , was one of Britain's foremost Marxist theorists. His pioneering work was foundational for the development of cultural studies. In this essay, originally published in New Left Review in , just before the publication of The Country and the City , and included in the collection Culture and Materialism , charts some of the problems of the nascent discipline.

Cultural materialism as a literary critical practice—this article will not address its anthropological namesake—is a Marxist-inspired and mostly British approach to in particular Shakespeare and early modern English literature that emerged and became prominent in the s. Its emphasis on the historical and material conditions of the production and reception of texts has remained influential, even if its political commitment and interventionist purposes have largely been abandoned and increasingly ignored. This does not rule out intentional human practice, but rejects the idealist position in seeing that practice as inseparable from specific historical conditions. Next to the dominant, hegemonic cultural formation we will thus find declining, residual formations and nascent, emergent ones. Inspired by its belief that ideological hegemony is never absolute and that all ideology at some point contradicts itself, cultural materialism reads texts for signs of subversion and political dissidence, arriving at often provocative interpretations whose ulterior purpose was to serve as interventions in current political debates.
In Marxist theory , society consists of two parts: the base or substructure and superstructure. The base comprises the forces and relations of production e. The base determines society's other relationships and ideas to comprise its superstructure, including its culture , institutions , political power structures , roles , rituals , and state. The relation of the two parts is not strictly unidirectional, Marx and Engels warned against such economic determinism as the superstructure can affect the base. However the influence of the base is predominant. In developing Alexis de Tocqueville 's observations, Marx identified civil society as the economic base and political society as the political superstructure. In the social production of their existence, men inevitably enter into definite relations, which are independent of their will, namely [the] relations of production appropriate to a given stage in the development of their material forces of production.
Williams, Raymond. Marxism and Literature. Oxford: Oxford University Press. In other words, Williams argues that hegemony offers a much more concrete and situated way of approaching the way that particular groups are dominated and subordinated in any social formation, and the way this process is instilled in the common sensical fibers of our everyday life. This matches my own definition: Hegemony describes a fluid process of struggle through which certain social relations are naturalized and coercively enforced, while others are made unviable and even unthinkable.
