Cinema loves Greece and Rome. Hollywood epics, animated movies, avant-garde features - all have turned to classical antiquity for inspiration. On the silver screen, we see a world of virtuous Christians, depraved pagans, gladiators, charioteers, Spartan warriors, and muscle-bound demigods - a potent mix of sex, violence and art.

Ancient Greece and Rome play starring roles as ideal sites for the iconic characters and plots that cinema and television use to depict the spectacle of the ancient world. Since the ancient Greek and Roman worlds are frequently used as the visual and narrative backdrop for adventure and romance, the audience is often thrilled to view the luxury, decadence, and excess notoriously enjoyed by the uninhibited ancients. Viewers of films and television series about the ancient world remain engaged in a long and sometimes complex relationship with the representation of classical antiquity on screen, an engagement that has been well analyzed in the last few years by scholars and critics. Text and bibliography expanded and updated. Keywords, summary, and links to video clips and trailers added. The study of films and television series that portray, adapt, and reinvent classical antiquity is a significant and rewarding critical subfield within the study of classical reception.

So pervasive are these images that this cinematic output dominates the public understanding of the ancient world.

Rome may never have had regular orgies, saluted its emperors with raised arms, or condemned gladiators to die with a downward point of a thumb, yet thanks to cinema all of these have become absolute mainstays of popular conceptions about Roman culture. In our modern cinematic world public understanding of the Roman and Greek classics is often based on the pervasive images of Hollywood epics. Fact becomes fiction, classics become fantasy, and the most arresting of these become blockbusters of classical antiquity. From traditional to Disney, from epic to satire the authors move beyond simple description, to enrich the reader with an understanding of the classics from the time they were created. Attitudes of the time had impact on every film, changes in politics were reflected in the cinematography, and this book examines the representation of Greece and Rome in popular and art-house cinema. The discussion is structured around ten case studies, each representing a different style of film, which gives us the opportunity to show how film genres, styles and audiences can all affect the way that antiquity is portrayed.
